Wat. Does anyone know why my plumosa fern grew this nearly 3 meter (9ft) long… thing? Please give me permission to prune this weirdo off!

My only guess is that I took her out of her normal NE facing window and put it on the dining table with the rest of my plants for the housesitter to water them more easily. Did it send out a scouting vine to look for more light or something?

I don’t have a proper answer to your question but in a home that beautiful, I’d want to explore too!

Definitely scouting vine for more light. Could you move it to the window it “found”? And I would think you can prune it but I’m not sure. The alternative would be wrapping it around the base plant I guess 🤷🏼
Pretty cool that it went look for a window though 🌱

Storing waffles in a bread box is something I didn’t know I needed in my life.

Don’t mind me… I’m just admiring your entire kitchen

Your Asparagus setaceus (technically not a fern) is a climber by nature. Once established, they can grow pretty quickly.

Please don’t prune! (Breaks my heart), if you’d like, let it climb somewhere and very soon it will fill out with beautiful leaves.

All I know is that would never happen to me because I’d never leave for 6 weeks if I had such a such a beautiful house

I had no idea asparagus fern could even do that! Vines are truly weird though. I have a jasmine and it’s a slow grower for me except sometimes it will, seemingly overnight, grow a 5ft vine and wrap around everything in it’s vicinity.

Every spring/summer mine also does this. She puts out one looooooooong tendril out of the blue. One day she’s normal, the next day I suddenly notice this. I just prune the skinny tendril to where the rest of the branches are. I left it alone one year, without pruning, and it didn’t make any difference. So if you want to keep it that way, sure. But I prefer to prune it down because it has thorns.

Edit: it has nothing to do with light. Mine does this every year even though she gets full morning sun. It’s just the way they grow!

  10. I HATE THIS PLANT SO MUCH. SOMEONE PLANTED IT OUTSIDE IN OUR TROPICAL CLIMATE, AND ITS THORNS SNAG AND GRAB AND TEAR. ITS ROOTS ARE TOO STUBBORN. I WISH TO RAZE IT FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH. DEATH TO HOOKED THORN PLANTS.

Plants are so weird. My hoyas both grow out their little vine (I’m pretty sure that’s how all hoyas do it) all brown and sad, trying to grab at stuff and then, months later they finally get leaves.

You were gone too long. It missed you and was reaching out to find you! (Or, it was thristy, looking for water.)

Was it trying to visit another plant friend in the kitchen?
